Love Me, Love My Winnipeg Jets

L’Atelier national du Manitoba’s PLEA TO VANCOUVER

In Canada, the divide between the haves and the have-nots grows wider every day. We less-fortunate souls are continually left behind, downtrodden and ignored by you wealthy lot and all of your fanciness.

Consider the facts, dearest Vancouver! Think of how fortunate you are! Look at all you have: a winter Olympics that will surely embarrass the scope our 1999 Pan-Am Games; a majestic natural beauty that shames our ‘ugly-sister’ frozen prairie tundra; and, a mediocre NHL team that could handily outperform our mediocre NHL team…that is, if we still had one.

[Editor’s Note: The Canucks? Mediocre? Okay, we’ll just let that slide…]

Nowadays, all we Winnipeggers are qualified for in the realm of hockey is to hand-over our best minor-league Moose players to your Canucks (whilst opening our hearts and our arena to your on-ice rejects

But it wasn’t always this way. Once upon a time, we flew high! Our story is being told in a new feature-length documentary, Death By Popcorn: the Tragedy of the Winnipeg Jets. A compendium of Jets videographic history, the film is about as conventional as a Hawerchuck goal—but just as poetic. The movie has already skated circles around audiences in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Whitehorse!

Synopsis: Peppered with action-packed cameos by Winnipeg All-Stars Dale Hawerchuk, Burton Cummings, Teemu Selanne, Billy Van and a recent interview with the man who sent the Jets straight into the jaws of death by throwing a cataclysmic box of popcorn onto the ice in Game 6 of the 1990 playoff series, Death by Popcorn follows our ill-fated team through their many travails with arch-enemies Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers, soul-crushing NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and many other agents of Winnipeg annihilation. Sadness on ice!
To YOU, Vancouver, the nation of Winnipeg submits this PLEA:
